I.
Philosophy
Two of the objectives of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Foundation are (1) to design, conduct, coordinate, and fund educational programs and initiatives that enhance appropriate, effective, and safe medication use in the senior population; and (2) to develop, support, and promote the patient-centered principles and practice of senior care pharmacy.
Accordingly, the ASCP Foundation conducts a post-graduate traineeship in Parkinson's disease pharmacotherapy. The traineeship offers unique opportunities for pharmacists to learn new skills, sharpen existing skills, and render new services.
The Parkinson's Disease Pharmacotherapy Traineeship will be conducted at the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois. The preceptor is Tanya Simuni, MD, Medical Director, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center and Associate Professor of Neurology, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
The Parkinson's Disease Pharmacotherapy Traineeship is administered by the ASCP Foundation, 1321 Duke Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314. The August 2012 session is funded by an educational grant from UCB.
II.
Objectives
The primary objectives of the ASCP Foundation Parkinson's Disease Pharmacotherapy Traineeship are to prepare pharmacists to provide a high level of pharmaceutical care to persons with Parkinson's disease and other neurologic disorders; to create pharmacist advocates for appropriate care and treatment of persons with Parkinson’s disease in the settings where they practice; and to positively impact the way pharmacists perceive their role in the care and treatment of persons with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
The full-time, five-day (Monday through Friday) traineeship will provide individualized, intensive, experiential training for selected practicing pharmacists. Participants should expect immersion into a busy, academic-based movement disorders clinic where they will participate in patient visits and have one-on-one interactions with physicians, patients and families. The traineeship offers the trainee an opportunity to observe and participate in the development of treatment plans for persons with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders, including alternative clinical diagnoses, control of medication adverse effects, drug interactions, dementia and depression, adjustment of therapy, and the use of adjunctive medications. The traineeship also offers the opportunity for pharmacists to work with an interdisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, social worker, speech and physical therapists, caregivers, family members, and patients to positively impact the treatment outcome.
Upon successful completion of the Parkinson’s Disease
Pharmacotherapy Traineeship, the pharmacist will be able to:
- Discuss the pathophysiology and differential diagnosis of Parkinson’s
disease and other movement disorders and the relation to treatment strategies.
- Discuss protective or preventive treatment, symptomatic treatment, and restorative or regenerative treatment for Parkinson's disease.
- Describe possible therapeutic management strategies
for persons with early, moderate, and advanced Parkinson’s disease.
- Identify and recommend therapies for management of non-motor manifestations of Parkinson's disease.
- Identify and recommend therapies for management of problems frequently encountered with long-term treatment of Parkinson's disease.
- Identify and discuss
patient counseling issues concerning Parkinson’s disease
therapy.
- Assess non-motor disability in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
- Assess the effect of drug management changes on Parkinson's disease symptoms.
- Describe research studies and novel treatment options to improve the control of Parkinson's disease symptoms.
III.
