Pain Management Traineeship

General Program Information

The traineeship is open to pharmacists from all practice settings. The ASCP Foundation Pain Management Traineeship focuses on patients in hospice / palliative care and post-acute / long-term care. Pain management issues in the acute care setting are not covered. See the traineeship curriculum for more information.

There is one traineeship session in 2012: June 25-29.

The traineeship is five days in length, Monday through Friday, with some evening sessions. There is a mandatory orientation meeting on Sunday evening. The traineeship will be conducted at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, and Heartland of Mentor in Mentor, Ohio.

The Pain Management Traineeship is supported by an educational grant from Covidien.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 20, 2012

Please read this information and the Policies and Guidelines carefully so you have a clear understanding of the traineeship goals, structure, and content, and the application procedure.

Trainees are responsible for all expenses related to travel, accommodations, meals, and incidentals. Trainees must make their own travel arrangements to the traineeship site. The ASCP Foundation will coordinate hotel accommodations, but trainees are responsible for payment. Trainees should plan to arrive no later than 3:00 p.m. Sunday preceding the traineeship for an evening orientation session; departure is after 5:00 p.m. Friday.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • The ASCP Foundation Pain Management Traineeship focuses on patients in hospice / palliative care and post-acute / long-term care. Pain management issues in the acute-care setting are not covered. See the curriculum for specific topics.
  • The Pain Management Traineeship is an in-depth program requiring familiarity with pre-traineeship reading materials, advance preparation of one case study that will be used to illustrate important therapeutic problems and issues during the traineeship, and interaction with patients and the interdisciplinary team at the traineeship sites.
  • Applicants must be willing to interact directly with patients suffering from acute and chronic pain. Traineeship participants will interact with patients in a variety of settings, including a nursing facility, a hospice, and in the home.
  • The primary focus of the traineeship is pain management, although other diseases and conditions will be encountered.
  • After the traineeship, participants are expected to become involved with local or state-level pain management initiatives and complete two case consults for which they made recommendations for treatment or interventions to improve care of patients with acute or chronic pain.

The application form and required exhibits must be received by the ASCP Foundation no later than MARCH 20.

Applications for the traineeship will be evaluated, and applicants will be notified of the outcome on or about April 20.
