Pain Management Traineeship

General Program Information

The traineeship is open to pharmacists from all practice settings. There will be two traineeship sessions in 2010: June 7-11 and October 18-22. Submission of an application indicates an ability to attend either session. An applicant's preference will be taken into consideration, but cannot be guaranteed. Six pharmacists will be selected for participation in each session.

The traineeship is five days in length, Monday through Friday, with some evening sessions. There is a mandatory orientation meeting on Sunday evening. The traineeship will be conducted at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, and Heartland of Mentor in Mentor, Ohio.

The Pain Management Traineeship is supported by an educational grant from Mallinckodt Inc./Covidien.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 31, 2010

Please read this information and the Policies and Guidelines carefully so you have a clear understanding of the traineeship goals, structure, and content, and the application procedure.

Trainees are responsible for all expenses related to travel, accommodations, meals, and incidentals. Trainees must make their own travel arrangements to the traineeship site. The ASCP Foundation will coordinate hotel accommodations, but trainees are responsible for payment. Trainees should plan to arrive no later than 3:00 p.m. Sunday preceding the traineeship for an evening orientation session; departure is after 5:00 p.m. Friday.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • The Pain Management Traineeship is an in-depth program requiring familiarity with pre-traineeship reading materials, advance preparation of one case study that will be used to illustrate important therapeutic problems and issues during the traineeship, and interaction with patients and the interdisciplinary team at the traineeship sites.
  • Applicants must be willing to interact directly with patients suffering from acute and chronic pain. Traineeship participants will interact with patients in a variety of settings, including a nursing facility, a hospice, and in the home.
  • The primary focus of the traineeship is pain management, although other diseases and conditions will be encountered.
  • After the traineeship, participants are expected to become involved with local or state-level pain management initiatives, and complete two case consults for which they made recommendations for treatment or interventions to improve care of patients with acute or chronic pain.

Please submit only the materials requested; do not add binders, dividers, brochures, or booklets.

The application form and required exhibits must be received by the ASCP Foundation no later than MARCH 31.

You are encouraged to submit your application electronically by completing the application form online and e-mailing it along with the "Additional Application Documents Required" (Exhibits) to info@ascpfoundation.org. In the subject line of the e-mail, please type "Pain Management Traineeship Application."

If you choose to mail your application and would like to receive confirmation that it has been received, please enclose a self-addressed post card, affix postage, and submit with your application.

If you have any questions or concerns about the traineeship or about submitting an application, we encourage you to speak with a colleague who has participated in this traineeship. A list of previous Pain Management Traineeship participants who have volunteered to serve as mentors to new applicants is included in these application materials.
