Senior Care Pharmacy
Student Rotations
To
address the shortage of specialists in geriatric pharmacotherapy,
the ASCP Foundation facilitated the establishment
of Senior Care Pharmacy Student Rotations at schools and
colleges of pharmacy.
The rotations are intended to increase the opportunities
for experiential training for pharmacy students interested
in the unique medication-related needs of the older adult
population and expose them to the variety of practice
settings available in geriatric pharmacotherapy.
A
number of preceptors and sites have received designation
as ASCP Foundation
Senior Care Pharmacy Student Rotation Affiliates.
The overall goal of each senior care
pharmacy student rotation is to further develop knowledge
and skills in:
- Senior care and consultant pharmacy
practice.
- Prevention and management of disability
in older adults.
- Collaboration with other health
and social services disciplines.
- Communication
with and advocacy for older adults in one or more
settings across the continuum of
care to improve health outcomes.
Pharmacy
students looking to fulfill a rotation requirement with
an ASCP Foundation-approved Senior Care Pharmacy Student
Rotation Affiliate
have two options.
-
Students attending a college of pharmacy that has an
ASCP Foundation-approved Senior Care Pharmacy Student
Rotation Affiliate should contact their director of
experiential learning.
-
Students attending a college of pharmacy that does not
have an ASCP Foundation-approved Senior Care Pharmacy
Student Rotation Affiliate may pursue placement as a
visiting student at a college of pharmacy that does.
